PittPharmacy_LorenSchleiden_0020Loren J. Schleiden, research coordinator at PittPharmacy and MS student in the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health, was awarded Best Poster, Masters Student Category at the University of Pittsburgh 2015 Health Disparities Poster Competition. His poster was entitled, Disparities in Antidepressant Use: Prevalence and Predictors among U.S. Adults with Limited English Proficiency. Schleiden linked data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to show that individuals with limited English proficiency had higher rates of depression and lower rates of antidepressant medication use than those who were comfortable and preferred speaking English.

Schleiden worked with PittPharmacy faculty members Joshua Thorpe, PhD, MPH, Carolyn T. Thorpe, PhD, MPH and Olufunmilola K. Odukoya, BPharm, PhD from the department of pharmacy and therapeutics on this study.

The poster competition was sponsored by the Schools of the Health Sciences and featured 28 posters from Pitt graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and first year professional students in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
