Madeline Chavara, (Class of 2017), attended the 71st United Nations General Assembly on September 21, 2016 to have a high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance. Chavara was the official representative for the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF). The meeting was used to highlight the growing challenges faced by both developed and developing countries in combating the rising rate of antimicrobial resistance. These include prescribing antimicrobials for the correct indication with proper diagnostic tools; ensuring antibiotics are both accessible to patients and are of good quality; avoiding the overuse of antibiotics in animals and agriculture; and increasing awareness on best healthcare practices.
