The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA) recently recognized Robert Maher Jr. BS ’93, PharmD ’97, CGP, as the winner of the NASPA Excellence in Innovation Award sponsored by Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc., during PPA’s 2013 Annual Conference held at the Wyndham Gettysburg on September 28, 2013 in Gettysburg, PA. The Excellence in Innovation Award recognizes a pharmacist who is involved in an innovative pharmacy practice resulting in improved patient care.

Maher is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy and a Pharmacist at Patton Pharmacy in Patton, PA. He has been involved in advancing the practice of pharmacy through innovation that focuses on improving the health of patients in Cambria County by the pharmacy services. The community pharmacy provides Medication Therapy Managerial Services, diabetes self-management education programs, geriatrics, pharmacotherapy, wellness and other disease management care. This interprofessional model is designed to improve suboptimal therapy, medication adherence and prevention of adverse health event while improving effectiveness to patients, insurers and the taxpayer in a rural, medically underserved, vulnerable population.
