The University requires that all students must maintain medical insurance. Furthermore, international with J1 visas are required by federal regulation to carry medical insurance for both themselves and their dependents.
The University will provide individual health insurance for those PhD students offered scholarships. Options for purchasing additional coverage for dependents and/or dental and vision care are available with details here: insurance plans
