PittPharmacy_Osterhaus_044On September 19,2014 Matthew Osterhaus, President of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) visited PittPharmacy. Osterhaus, a 1980 graduate of The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy, Inc., and former president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association, graciously spent three days in Pittsburgh meeting and interacting with students, faculty, and staff.

PittPharmacy_Osterhaus_021P2 student Kaleen Hayes introduced Osterhaus with these words:

“Some of you may know that with the help of Dr. Janis Rood, then community resident at Osterhaus Pharmacy, Troy Albrecht, Daniela Policicchio, Brian Terreri and I presented a poster at the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Mid-Year conference last January on the innovative business model the pharmacy uses. Mr. Osterhaus heard about our presentation and graciously invited us to meet him at the Annual APhA conference in Orlando last March. What started as a five minute Ignite Presentation on innovations in pharmacy has turned into a rewarding relationship from which we’ve learned so much about our profession and the advances we can make in it.”

Osterhaus gave a wisdom-packed speech about his position as president of APhA, how Osterhaus Pharmacy sets the standard for patient-based care in the community, and overall, what he has learned throughout his life as a pharmacist. “Change happens,” Osterhaus said as he was concluding his speech. “It is important to embrace it and be responsive to it in order to survive”.
